Running for Mars

Team_MARSA team of 70 people ran in the 2012 Run for a Mom in honor of a foster mom, an adoptive mom and a birth mom.

When Abbie Greer saw the Facebook announcement for the Agape Run for a Mom 5K and Fun Run, she immediately knew she wanted to be a part of the event. As a longtime supporter of Agape, her connection with the ministry was deepened with the recent adoption of her son, Bennett. Agape’s Run for a Mom takes place Mother’s Day weekend, which gives runners the perfect opportunity to dedicate their run/walk to a special woman in their life. Abbie liked the idea of running for someone and decided to run for Bennett’s foster and birth mothers. Seeing that there was an option to create a team of a least 5 members she decided to create a team, name her team MARS. The acronym stood for Mothers: Abbie (Bennett’s adoptive mom), Rachael (his birth mom) and Shelly (his foster mom). These were all of Bennett’s mothers.

The first thing Abbie decided to do was register Bennett’s foster and birth moms as runners. Abbie chose to put their numbers on her back during the run so they would be ‘running with her.’ Abbie wanted to help Agape to get as many runners as she could so she talked to friends and family about being on her team. Knowing she was a newly adoptive mother there was a lot of interest and many people wanted to join her team to run in honor of Bennett’s mothers. Abbie posted on Facebook and told the people in her exercise class about her team for Agape’s Run for a Mom. Friends of friends started wanting to join her team! It grew so large that she ended up with 70 people on her team! Everyone wanted to support her, honoring Bennett’s moms and help other families trying to adopt to be able have the wonderful experience she had.

So how many people can you get on your team? Think you can top Abbie’s 70? Who are you running for?
